What is the ROI on window film?

In by admin

The return on investment (ROI) of window film depends on several factors:

  • Residential versus commercial application
  • Surface area covered by windows
  • Climate
  • Orientation of building and windows
  • Number of panes

Residential vs. Commercial Application

Commercial buildings can see a return on investment in as quickly as two years, but the average return on investment is five to six years. For residential properties, determining the ROI is a little more difficult, and the return on investment takes longer, but homeowners will typically see an ROI in five to seven years.

Surface Area

The primary reason why residential applications tend to take longer to achieve a positive ROI than commercial properties is the surface area of the building facade covered by windows. Commercial buildings typically display larger windows, and a greater percentage of the building’s exterior is covered in windows. The more windows your property has, the greater the impact installing window film will have on your energy costs and consequently your return on investment.

Climate

Climate also impacts the ROI of a window film installation. More extreme climates subject to greater temperature fluctuations will typically allow for a faster return on investment.

Orientation of Building & Windows

The direction your building faces and the orientation of your windows is another factor that determines the return on investment. Buildings with east- and west-facing windows benefit from window film the most because of the angle at which the sun’s rays strike the glass.

Type of Existing Windows

Lastly, the number of panes your existing windows have can also dictate how quickly you will see a return on your investment. When you apply window film to a single pane of glass, the incremental energy savings is greater than when you apply window film to a double-pane window. The double-pane window will allow for better overall efficiency, but the marginal energy savings is less, resulting in a slightly longer return on investment period.

An additional consideration to keep in mind when evaluating the return on investment of window film is the benefits you will be receiving during the payback period. As the window film is paying for itself, you’ll be enjoying reduced glare, comfortable interior temperatures, and UV protection from the sun. Not to mention, the extended life of your floorings, furnishings, upholstery, and artwork will result in savings over time.
